Cooperation and Solidarity: The Strength of Society in Facing Crises

Allah, The Most Exalted, said: {And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.} Allah, The Most Exalted, has spoken the truth.

One of the greatest values that Islam has emphasized, and which, when present and deeply rooted in society, enables it to confront the difficult circumstances and challenges that confront it, is the virtue of cooperation: that each of us reach out to those in need and not leave them to face the difficulties and hardships of life alone. Cooperation may be undertaken by individuals, but it becomes more effective and influential when it develops into a broader approach within society and at the national level, undertaken by institutions and associations that have devoted themselves to serving society.

This is the value to which Allah, The Most Exalted, called His believing worshippers when He wanted them to cooperate in everything that brings goodness and righteousness to themselves, their society, and their nation. He said: {And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression}, meaning that they should cooperate in everything that brings goodness and righteousness to them, whether at the individual or societal level. Allah, The Most Exalted, wants believers not to remain confined within themselves with regard to the abilities and resources He has given them, nor to limit themselves to their own families. Rather, He wants them to share one another’s concerns and strengthen one another: the wealthy among them should assist the poor with their wealth; the knowledgeable should assist the ignorant with their knowledge; the strong should assist the weak with their strength; and the person who holds a position should assist through what that position affords them. Nor should one who has a kind word withhold it from someone who needs it, using it to relieve distress or worry, or to console someone who has lost a loved one. Nor should one who has advice withhold it, or one who is able to fulfill a need refrain from going to fulfill the needs of his brothers…

This is indicated by the hadith narrated from the Messenger of Allah (p.): “The believer to the believer is like a firmly joined structure, each part strengthening the other.” Just as a building cannot stand except through its stones being closely joined together and supporting one another, likewise, for a believing society to stand and grow strong, its members must cooperate, support one another, and strengthen one another.

The Messenger of Allah (p.) also referred to this image in another hadith: “The example of the believers in their mutual compassion, affection, and sympathy is that of a single body: when one part of it suffers, the rest of the body responds with sleeplessness and fever.” The hadith likens believers to a single body. Just as the body, when one of its parts suffers, experiences pain and distress along with it and remains awake because of its pain, likewise believers: when one of them suffers or faces hardship, the entire believing society must stand with him in his pain and suffering. They must not leave the poor, the orphan, the oppressed, or anyone in need to suffer; rather, everyone should rise to serve and assist him.

The hadiths have indicated that these virtues strengthen a person’s standing with Allah, The Most Exalted, and contribute to improving his life in this world.

It is narrated in a hadith: “Allah is in the aid of the servant as long as the servant is in the aid of his brother.” When a believer strives to fulfill the need of his fellow believer, he does not bring goodness only to that person; goodness also returns to him, because Allah, The Most Exalted, will assist him in his own need. And whoever has Allah as their helper in fulfilling his need, that need will be fulfilled, by Allah’s permission.

In another hadith: “Whoever relieves a believer of one of the hardships of this world, Allah, The Most Exalted, will relieve them of one of the hardships of the Day of Resurrection.” That is, whoever helps a person emerge from hardship or distress, stands by them, or removes worry or grief from them, Allah will be with them in the distress and hardship he may encounter on the Day of Resurrection, and they will receive His mercy.

The hadith also states: “All creation are the dependents of Allah, The Most Exalted, and the most beloved of creation to Allah, The Most Exalted, are those who most beneficial to His dependents, and whoever brings joy to a household…” By helping the servants of Allah, who are His dependents, and bringing joy to them, a person attains the love of Allah, which is the highest degree that Allah, Mighty and Exalted, grants to His servants.

The Messenger of Allah (p.) regarded helping others as a door and a path leading to Paradise. It is narrated that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (p.), who said to him: “Shall I not guide you to something through which Allah will admit you to Paradise?” He said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Give from what Allah has given you.” He said: “What if I am more in need than the person to whom I would give?” He said: “Support the oppressed.” He said: “What if I am weaker than the person whom I would support?” — that is, what if I do not have the ability to do so, because that would put me in confrontation with the oppressor — “He said: ‘Do something for the incapable.’” This refers to a person who does not know how to conduct himself properly; help him until he learns how to manage his affairs. He said: “What if I am less capable than the person for whom I would do this?” He said: “Then restrain your tongue except from good.” That is, make your tongue a tongue of goodness, kindness, and reconciliation among people. Thus, in order to reach Paradise, one must acquire one of these virtues or one of these qualities.

The Prophetic biography presented the most prominent example of cooperation and solidarity when the Muslims migrated from Mecca to Medina, leaving behind their homes, wealth, and places of work. At that time, the people of Medina opened their homes to them, shared their wealth with them, and shared their houses with them. Allah, The Most Exalted, immortalized this value so that it would remain present throughout the ages, when He said: {And [also for] those who were settled in the Home [of Medina] and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their hearts of what the emigrants were given but give them preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul — it is those who will be the successful.}

Dear brothers and sisters, we are more in need than ever of strengthening this value in our lives, as we face the most difficult circumstances at every level. We must cooperate to meet the needs of those living among us: those who have lost their provider or their work; those who are unable to secure food, medicine, housing, or schooling for their children; those who have been displaced from their land, leaving behind everything that had enabled them to preserve their dignity and refrain from asking others; those burdened by debt; and those who need a word that can relieve their grief or worry, or restore to them hope, steadfastness, and the ability to face challenges.

This cannot be achieved solely through individual initiatives, despite their importance. Rather, it requires the joining of efforts and cooperation among individuals, groups, institutions, and the various parties capable of giving and providing assistance. It requires work at the level of neighborhoods, regions, and villages, and that this be present in every mosque and every place of gathering, so that giving may be continuous and comprehensive rather than seasonal or merely a reaction to an emergency situation.

Let us ask Allah, The Most Exalted, to help us respond to His call, so that we may be among those who deserve to be counted among those who fulfill the needs of the needy, relieve the distress of those in hardship, and assist those who cannot find medicine or medical treatment, or those who are unable to secure food or a home in which to shelter. Let us be a source of strength for every oppressed person, so that we may attain the merit of this act of worship. For when a person reaches the highest level of worship, as stated in the hadith, he becomes one who goes about fulfilling people’s needs, and the value of his worship is manifested in serving them. Thus, we attain what Allah has promised us: {And whatever good you put forward for yourselves — you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.} {And whoever does righteous deeds while he is a believer — he will not fear injustice or deprivation.}

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

The Second Sermon
Worshippers of Allah, I advise you and advise myself with the counsel of the Messenger of Allah (p.), who said:

“Servants of Allah, whoever Allah transfers from the humiliation of disobedience to the honor of obedience, He makes him rich without wealth, grants him honor without a clan, and gives him companionship without a companion… Whoever fears Allah, Allah makes all things fear him; and whoever does not fear Allah, Allah makes him fear everything. Whoever is content with little sustenance from Allah, Allah is content with little of his deeds… Whoever renounces the world, Allah establishes wisdom in his heart, makes his tongue speak it, shows him the defects of the world, its disease and its cure, and brings him safely out of this world to the Abode of Permanence… Whoever wishes to be the most honored of people, let him fear Allah… Whoever wishes to be the strongest of people, let him rely upon Allah… Whoever wishes to be the richest of people, let him have greater trust in what is in the hands of Allah than in what is in his own hands.”

Dear brothers and sisters, by adhering to these counsels, we can become stronger over ourselves, take hold of our affairs and decisions, and direct ourselves toward what Allah loves and is pleased with. Through piety, we acquire the ability to confront our enemies, prevail, and face challenges.

We begin in the south of this homeland, where the enemy continues its attacks through airstrikes targeting areas near the sites it occupies, while demolition and burning operations against infrastructure, public and private institutions, and health and social centers continue in the villages and towns under its control, with the aim of consolidating its presence there.

There remains concern that the enemy’s prime minister may take escalatory steps to improve his position ahead of the elections that will take place within his entity at the end of next month, which makes it necessary to remain vigilant against any adventure he may undertake.

In light of what is happening, we reiterate our call for the Lebanese state to examine its options in dealing with the coming phase, after it has become clear that the enemy will not withdraw from the positions it has occupied, and that it should not rely solely on negotiations from which the enemy has begun to distance itself, and which will not achieve what it and the Lebanese people seek. It should make use of the cards of strength and pressure at its disposal in a way that preserves Lebanon’s right to its land and its sovereignty over it. Lebanon is not weak if it mobilizes its sources of strength at home and abroad…

The fundamental matter remains strengthening their internal unity, so that their force is not directed against one another but against their enemy, and so that they do not give those seeking to stir discord among them an opportunity to achieve their objective.

In this context, we call for strengthening the capabilities of the Lebanese Army so that it can carry out its missions of defending the homeland and safeguarding its territory. Here, we commend any effort made in this regard, so that there will be no security vacuum following the failure to renew the mandate of UNIFIL, which the enemy may benefit from, and indeed seeks to benefit from, attempting to exploit it to consolidate its occupation in the south.
We return to the concern that has become a source of sleeplessness for the Lebanese: the worsening living situation as a result of the astronomical rise in the prices of goods, foodstuffs, and fuel, and the high costs of obtaining water and electricity, education, and medical care, amid widespread unemployment and declining salaries in public and private institutions. We fear the repercussions of this at the social level, as well as at the monetary and security levels.

In light of what is happening, we once again call on the Lebanese government to activate its role in this area by tightening oversight of prices, preventing traders and monopolists from tampering with citizens’ livelihoods, health, and essential needs, strengthening assistance to poor and vulnerable groups who, according to statistics, have come to constitute the majority of the Lebanese people, and reconsidering the tax policy imposed on citizens, which has become a burden on them and has increased the weight of their hardships.

We come to the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, which is being held amid the worsening of crises at the regional and global levels, crises that have come to threaten security, the economy, and stability. We had hoped that this meeting would contribute to resolving the problems of this world, addressing the crises confronting it, and stopping the ongoing bleeding at the humanitarian, economic, urban, and environmental levels.

It is regrettable that the United Nations does not exercise its role in the required manner, and that it has transformed from an institution established to achieve global peace and security, promote dialogue among states, and lift injustice from the shoulders of vulnerable states, into a platform for threatening wars, igniting or intensifying them, legitimizing the injustice taking place in the world, and providing cover for it.

What we are witnessing reveals the extent of the decline that has affected the role of the United Nations under the dominance of the major powers, and confirms to the states and peoples suffering from this dominance that their rights will not be safeguarded through silence or by waiting for someone to do them justice in a world that respects only the strong. Rather, they must unite their efforts, raise their voices, and defend their sovereignty and their right to self-determination, so that international law does not remain strong against the weak and powerless before the strong.

Finally, we recall the second anniversary of the martyrdom of two great figures who symbolized this homeland and its defense unto martyrdom: His Eminence Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah and His Eminence Sayyid Hashem Safieddine.

On this painful occasion, and in the face of the loss of these two dear brothers, we feel the magnitude of the responsibility they have left behind. Loyalty to them and to all the martyrs who went before them on this path lies in preserving this homeland, its unity, its strength, its dignity, and its sovereignty over its land.
